Paradise

Shui Yue Dong Tian is a very popular wuxia television miniseries which first aired in mainland China and Hong Kong in late 2003 and was shown on Chinese television stations in the United States the following year. Produced by Zhouyi Media, it was an attempt to return to earlier values of production, with very high-quality sets, costumes, effects and an all-star cast.

Taking place in about 294 A.D., during the Western Jin era, it is the story of three young men, the Tong brothers, who live with their clan and family in a secluded valley protected from the outside world. No one in the valley has left it for five hundred years, ever since the mighty general Long Teng brought them there for protection. Since the dawn of time, members of the clan had used their gifts of divination, spiritual intuition and magic to serve the Emperors, but were betrayed by an ambitious, half-mad relative. Now, the boys venture to the forbidden outside world in search of healing magic for their dying father, discovering mortal danger, friendship, and passionate love. A branch of their own family remains powerful in the martial arts world, and an ancient enemy still lives.

The highlight of this series is a memorable performance by veteran stage and screen actor Norman Chu as the evil Yin Zhong. The film also brought in Cheng Pei Pei from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and reunited relative newcomers Lu Xing Yu and Yang Guang from Wesley (Miss Yang also co-starred in Shi Mian Mai Fu, House of Flying Daggers). Liu Quan had recently appeared with Yu Bo and Zhang Jin in The Eleventh Son. The three boys are played by Yu Bo, Yang Jun Yi, and Zhang Jin.

The sequel to this series is Ling Jing Chuan Qi, or Legend of Magic Mirror, and it is by this title that the complete series has come to be known. The complete series is available on DVD from several online outlets. It is entirely in Mandarin and has no English subtitles.
