In 980AD, Northern Song launched an unsuccessful attack on the territory of Yu. After it's huge military defeat, Song had been enduring continuous attacks from the increasingly powerful Liao. To defend their borders, Emperor Taizong appointed Yang Ye, a military strategist, to lead the Song army.
At the Gate of Yemen, Yang Ye and his sons fought off the invading Liao army, whom had outnumbered and out-supplied them. Though their glorious victory made the Yang clan the national heroes, it also attracted jealousy and resentments from their peers, especially from Chanceller Pan Ren Mei.
Pan's peer rivalry escalated to boiling hatre after Yang Qi Lang mortally wounded his son in a duel. To exact his revenge, he married his daughter into the Royal family to seed mistrust between the emperor and the Yang clan. He also conspired with the enemy to entrap and kill them at the battle of Jinshatan, where six of the seven Yang brothers perished.
The only survivor, Yang Liu Lang, was left to question whether his royalty still belonged to the emperor who betrayed his family and whether he should carry on his father's dying wish: Protect and defend the imperial Song.
